34% of consumers surveyed say their consumption of nutrition and snack bars increased in 2020—and the trend doesn’t show signs of slowing any time soon.

**Energy bars have the power**
Whether grabbing one to combat a mid-afternoon slump or for a pre-workout energy boost, consumers love nutrition bars as a convenient energy source. Energy bars are designed to replenish calories burned during exercise and provide the ‘oomph’ to keep people moving throughout their busy days.
**Function, fiber and healthy aging**
When it comes to getting the most out of the foods they eat, consumers look for functional ingredients that can help produce a positive health outcome via physiological activity in the body. From dietary fiber to protein and more, consumers want their nutrition bars to contain beneficial ingredients. Consumers prefer ingredients that are associated with supporting a healthy lifestyle, including: digestive health, brain and eye health, immunity and more.
**Plant-based protein content**
Protein content is top-of-mind for consumers looking for nutritional building blocks, but now more than ever, the source of the protein is equally important (especially to younger consumers, who are more likely to follow vegetarian diets).

Consumer-preferred products—whether labeled ‘reduced sugar,’ ‘low sugar,’ or ‘less added sugars’— share one thing in common: sugar reduction.
